Stereoview photograph of tourists and bathers on abeach at Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, by S.F. Adams of New Bedford, Massachusetts,circa 1870s. The view, identified in pencil on the reverse as Bathing Scenes,shows a dozen or more men and women seated on and standing around a bench atthe edge of a sandy beach with some two dozen more folks in and around thewater beyond them. A couple of schooners are visible in the distance. StephenFellows Adams (1844-1927) was living in New Bedford in 1870 and gave hisoccupation as Photographer. He made many views of scenes around Martha’sVineyard in the 1870s. He was still living in New Bedford in 1880, but gave hisoccupation as Dry Goods Dealer in that year. The coarsely tinted stereoview isin good condition with light to moderate wear and light soiling. Note the lightto moderate rubbing around the edges and at the corners of the card. Thephotographs exhibit good or better tonal range and show good or better detail.The tinting looks better when viewed with a stereoscope. A nice early Martha’sVineyard MA stereoview!
