Stereoview photograph of an advertising street bannerfor J.A. French’s Photograph Gallery by J.A. French of Keene, New Hampshire,circa 1870s. The untitled view shows a painted banner made of see through wire meshhung out in front of a building with other buildings visible behind it. The texton the banner reads “J.A. French Photograph Gallery” with “D.B. Silsby DryGoods” and “Bridgman’s Block” below. Jotham A. French (1834-1898) was aprolific Keene NH photographer. His gallery was located in Bridgman’s Block, onthe east side of Central Square. He must have teamed up with David B. Silsby(1841-1899) to pay for this banner and hang it out over the street in front ofthe building they occupied at the time. There is a large neo classical buildingacross the street, and there are several signs on the building to its right:Billiards, Central House, Meals at all Times, Boston Store, and Harness Shop.Does Michael Croke have this banner hanging in his living room in Keene? Thestereoview is in only good condition with light wear and soiling. Note thewater stain at the bottom right corner with a bit of minor surface paper lossat the edge. The stain just rises up to the bottom edge of the right photographbut does not really affect the image much. The photographs exhibit good orbetter tonal range (tad light in the left photograph) and shows good to verygood detail. The view really pops in the stereoscope, especially where you’relooking through the mesh banner. A nice bit of Keene NH and photographichistory!
