Original circa 1870\'s-1880\'s tintype of a man sitting behind his wild & elaborate folk art mechanical invention. The hand made mechanical folk art wood carving, invention, or mechanical toy is quite complicated. It is housed inside of a wooden box with a folding lid. When the main structure was lifted out of the box the pieces laying loose in the box would hook on to the main structure. This would form an even larger & more elaborate structure with many mechanical functions.
Note the various arms, gears, levers, wheels, pulleys, etc. on the upright section of the sculpture displayed in the box. The maker holds in his hand a knife with which he carved this fanciful Rube Goldberg type invention. The wooden mechanical folk art sculpture is displayed with the box opened up in front of the folk artist maker or inventor who carved it.A very rare & unusual tintype. Measures 3 5/16 inches by 2 3/8 inches. Has some minor age flaws which are commonly found on most tintypes including some small bends, some minor wear, & some rust on the back. Also, there are two small smooth dents on the background near the edges. This interesting photo came from an old Pennsylvania collection of tintypes which was formed over several decades.Please examine the photos closely & purchase based on your own judgement as to condition & value.
