1848 PROMISSORY NOTE - FITCH BALLARD - TROY, PA & LETTER FROM MIDDLEFIELD & COHN:

We are offering a promissory note, dated 9th mo 8th, 1848 [September 8th, 1848] for the amount of $1,587.66, which translates to about $60,000 in today\'s money. The payee was Middlefield & Cohn, New York City; the payor was a man by the name of Fitch Ballard, of Troy, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. The note was to be paid 6 months after the date of the note. The letter from Middlefield & Cohn, dated 11th mo 27th, 1848 [November 27th, 1848] reads, \"Respected Friend, it is now approaching the 1st of January, the time when we balance our books. Enclosed please find note for the amount of your account which you will please sign and forward by return mail. We are Very Respecfully, Your Friend, Middlefield & Cohn\". Apparently the first note dated September 8, 1848 (the one we are offering here), was ignored, not signed, or sent back, necessitating them to send a second request.
