ITEM DESCRIPTION:

1848 Turkey Constantinople, promissorynote signed banker Theodor Baltazz

Baltazzi was the name of a Greek-Austrianfamily. The Baltazzis came from Smyrna, where theyran a bank, and later settled in Vienna. Theodor Baltazzi had won the favor ofSultan Abdülmecid I as a banker in the Ottoman Empire around 1850. As afinancial advisor, he became wealthy through the income from the toll for theGalata Bridge in Constantinople. He had a total of ten children with hisEnglish wife Eliza Sarell. The wealthy Baltazzi family had found acceptance inthe highest social circles due to the extraordinary riding talent of their foursons, Aristide, Alexander, Hector and Henri (Heinrich). They were welcome guests and participantson the turf courses of Europe. The riders enjoyed the sympathy of theBritish heir to the throne Edward VII and the horse-loving Empress Elisabeth ofAustria-Hungary, with whom they had been introduced by her sister Marie inBavaria on the occasion of a hunt at Belvoir Castle. Alexander and Aristide jointly owned thefamous racehorse Kisbér. They won the English Epsom Derby in 1876and became known as the Baltazzi brothers. Their brother Hector, famous as asteeplechase rider and Austria\'s greatest amateur jockey of the 19th century, lived in Paris from around 1895 until the beginning of the war in 1914, fromwhere he had to return to Austria; he died in Vienna during a visit to theJockey Club for Austria.[Note: 1] Helene Vetsera also liked to accompanyher brothers on hunts and was also a participant in the imperial and royalhunting parties at Gödöllő Castle, the Hungarian hunting estate of Empress Sisi. Despite Helene\'s marriage to theAustro-Hungarian diplomat Baron Albin Vetsera in 1864 and her good contactswith the aristocratic society in Vienna, the Baltazzis were unable to rise tothe \"first society\" of the high aristocracy. After the death of Helene\'s daughter MaryVetsera on January 30, 1889 in Mayerling, the Baltazzi family finally fell outof favor with the emperor and the high nobility. The brothers were accused of involvementin the tragedy in which Crown Prince Rudolf and his niece Mary were killed, andthey were shadowed by the police for months. Helene had lost her reputation. Only the brothers were able to continue tolive off their fame as equestrians, thanks to the intercession of Prince EdwardVII. Before the First World War, the Baltazzissold their properties in Constantinople. After the war, they also lost theirproperties in the Czech Republic, where Aristides had founded a stud farm inNapajedla in 1886.
