1818 LAND DEED
WOLFEBOROUGH, NEW HAMPSHIREREVOLUTIONARY WAR SOLDIERThis early 19th century deed involves a transfer from Jonathan Hersey of Wolfeborough in the County of Strafford and State of New Hampshire, husbandman, to James Hersey of Tuftonborough in the County and State aforesaid, gentleman. In return for a payment of nine hundred and fifty dollars, Jonathan deeded land situated in Tuftonborough equaling fifty acres. It was part of Lot Number eight, the tract originally laid out to Daniel Peirce Esquire of Portsmouth, deceased, being the northeast side of the Lot Number eight and the same fifty acres conveyed by James Hersey to William Hersey late of said Wolfeborough, deceased. Jonathan Hersey signed the deed 16 June 1818 in the presence of witnesses Richard Rust and Samuel Hersey It was acknowledged by Richard Rust the same day as Justice of the Peace.
The document was received, examined and recorded in Strafford County records on 20 February 1819 by Richard Rust, Register. . The deed is in good condition. All is legible with dark text. There are fold lines but no separation. A few pinholes and a bit of staining. There is some toning, but all is good for the age. The wax seal is present. **Information on the men involved:
Jonathan Hersey had earlier originally received 140 acres of land from Original Proprietor Daniel Peirce of Portsmouth (History of Wolfeboro, Parker). According to the deed, it appears that the fifty acres in question at the northeast side of lot eight by then belonged to Jonathan\'s son William Hersey (1777-1812) who had died intestate and without wife or children. Upon William\'s death, his property would pass to his next of kin, his father Jonathan. The father, in turn, deeded the fifty acres back to his son, James who had owned it previously. It does get confusing but according to vital and other records, this appears the way it works.
Jonathan Hersey, grantor, was born in Newmarket, New Hampshire to James Hersey and Jemina Burleigh who lived in Sanbornton. He married Mary Wiggin (1751-1816) of Stratham, and they had nine known children. Jonathan was a Revolutionary War soldier. Military records show that on 5 Nov 1775, he was a soldier at Fort Washington, Peirce Island in Portsmouth Harbor. He was a drummer in capt David Copp\'s Company. The large Hersey family lived in Wolfeborough, Tuftonborough and Sanbornton. Many of them are buried in the Hersey Cemetery that lies on the Wolfeboro-Tuftonborough town line. The DAR has marked Jonathan Hersey\'s grave.I will be listing more 18th and early 19th century deeds and documents from Maine and New Hampshire and will always combine shipping if possible. Thank you.
