1807 LAND DEED
FARMINGTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE This early century deed involves a transfer from Reuben Hayes of New Durham in the County of Strafford, State of New Hampshire, husbandman, for the consideration of three hundred and forty one dollars received from Jonathan French of Farmington the same county and state aforesaid, husbandman, three parcels of land in Farmington. They were forty one acres that comprised part of the original acre grant, Lot No. 129 of Thomas Young. Another lot was twenty acres formerly owned by John Burnham as well as another 61 acres also owned by John Burnham. Reuben received a total of 122 acres. The deed was signed by Reuben Hayes and wife Patience Hayes on 13 July 1807. It was witnessed by Jeremiah Waldron and William Tash. The document was acknowledged the same day by Waldron also as Justice of the Peace, and it was received and recorded into Strafford Records 26 September 1807 by Jonas C March, Register.
The deed is in good condition. It has fold lines, some toning but no separations. There are a few pinholes. All is legible, and the seals of both grantors, Reuben Hayes and wife Patience, are present and firm. I will be listing more 18th and early 19th century deeds and documents from Maine and New Hampshire and will always combine shipping if possible. Thank you. A little about the people:Reuben Hayes, the grantor, was born in Madbury, New Hampshire in 1776, the son of Elihu and Elizabeth (Davis) Hayes. He married Patience Tash, in 1803 in Gilmanton. and died in 1864. In later years, Reuben lived in Alton where he raised his family and was obviously a very accomplished farmer and landowner. His extensive will probated in New Hampshire as well as in Iowa where a son lived showed holdings still in Farmington, Madbury and Gilmanton and Alton New Hampshire. He left all in legacies to his wife, children and grandchildren. Patience, the other grantor and wife of Reuben, was born in Gilmanton in 1788, the daughter of Rev War NH Regiment Commander Thomas Tash and his second wife Martha Crummett. She died in Alton in 1868. Neither she nor Reuben are found in Find-a-Grave records. Jonathan French, grantee, was born in 1755 in Rochester, that part of which became Farmington. He was the son of Bradstreet French and Isabel Rogers. Jonathan and his wife Sally (not the Sally Bunker, erroneously being repeated on line as marrying him at age 10) lived in Farmington and possibly is the Jonathan French who appeared in Orford, New Hampshire in the 1810 census. According to records, that Jonathan died in Orford 23 May 1825.
