Thedocumentis handwritten, andis a receiptfor apayment of $1.50 to a man namedHenry Powers.
I believe that this man wasCaptain Henry Powers(1753-1822), who is buried in theOld Burying Groundin Berlin, Worcester County, Massachusetts.
Powers appearsto have signed this document,possiblyon both sides of the receipt, althoughI have not foundan image of his signatureonline with which to makea comparison.
Powers fought in the Revolutionary War.Afterward,he was chosen at a civic meeting onApril 12, 1784,to be one of the three town assessors.
On May 4,1812, Powers was chosen to bethetown of Berlin\'sfirst representative to theGeneral Court of theCommonwealth ofMassachusetts, a post to whichhe wasreappointed several times.
The payment was from the \"Estate ofCapt. Manaseh Fairbank, late of Berlin\".
