Seymour, 24 Duke Street St James’s to Maberly in Bedford Row; London local; 1 handstamp; coloured strike of Piccadilly Unpaid Penny Post oval in orange; 8 o’Clock 3 JY 1797 MORN indented oval. Letter : “No doubt you are surprised at not hearing from me on the receipt of the letter which you enclosed to me from her Grace the Duchess of Somerset but allow me to assure you that added to my other afflictions my mind on perusing her Grace\'s letter has been in such a state of embarrassment and anxiety fearful that her Grace has received a wrong impression from my brothers letter Not being equal to the task of writing since and now take up my pen to assure you that it is the most fervent wish I have to proceed to America though I may not be fortunate enough to meet my father alive , Informed was very ill in a letter I received a month since and I am very sure that my brother has no wish nor intention to the country as soon as a proper opportunity offers therefore an extremely concerned that her Grace should have drawn that conclusion from his letter which I looked upon as representing that my coming to him while at Plymouth Procure me a passage any sooner than waiting till he came round … Has so far honoured me already with her protection that I am ready to comply with anything her Grace May propose for me and hope that I may always merit continuance of the same”.
