This type of fur trade era, totems, were given to theHudson\'s Bay Company fur traders, Indians, and trappers who went deep into the wildernessto trap furs. Thistype trade good was highly prized by the trappers,Indians,and fur traders.

The Hudson\'sBay (Fur) Company wasincorporated byEnglish royal charter in 1670. The company functioned as thede factogovernmentin parts of North America for nearly 200 years until the Hudson\'s Bay Companysold the land it owned (the entire Hudson Bay drainage basin, known as Rupert\'sLand) to Canada in 1869 as part of the Deed of Surrender, authorized by theRupert\'s Land Act 1868. During its peak, the company controlled the fur tradethroughout much of the English, and later British, controlled North America. Bythe mid-19th century, the company evolved into a mercantile business selling awide variety of products from furs to fine home ware in a small number of salesshops (as opposed to trading posts) across Canada.
