Volcano Volcanic rock from 1991 Mount Pinatubo PhilippinesEruption

Collected by Robert LaPointe following the June 15, 1991eruption. Collected on the former Clark Air Base, Philippines which was about15 miles from the summit of Mount Pinatubo. This sample is mostly dacite fromthe climatic phase of the eruption.

The 1991 eruption of Pinatubo was andesite and dacite in thepre-climactic phase but only dacite in the climactic phase. The climacticeruption produced two types of dacitic pumice--one was tan-gray and phenocrystpoor, the other was white and phenocryst rich. The white was always dominant(80-90%); the proportion of tan-gray pumice decreased from about 20% to 10%from bottom to top in the tephra-fall deposit

Rocks found at present day Mount Pinatubo are mostly dacitewith andesitic xenoliths (foreign rock fragments). Andesite is a volcanic rockthat is gray to black in color. This rock mostly comes from stratovolcanoes ina form of thick lava flows. Basalt lava is a volcanic rock that's typicallyhard and black in color. Due to its low silica content (under 50% of itsweight), it flows fast which allows volcanic gases to escape withoutexplosions.

Dacite lava is most often light gray, but can be dark gray to black. It is oneof the most common rock types associated with enormous Plinian-style eruptions.Dacite lava consists of about 63 to 68 percent silica (SiO2). Dacite generallyerupts at temperatures between 800 and 1000°C. Common minerals include plagioclase feldspar, pyroxene, and amphibole. Dacite has a high crystal content. This combined witha high silica content makes it viscous and prone to explosive eruptions.
