What do we have here? This Watchtower related item will bean invaluable resource for any true Watchtower historian. This complete 1861volume entitled HERALD OF THE KINGDOM AND AGE TO COME published monthly by JohnThomas from Hoboken NJ, represents a glimpse into the world between the time ofthe Adventists of the 1840’s and the Bible Students of the 1880’s directed byPastor Russell with his publication of THE WATCHTOWER AND HERALD OF CHRIST’SPRESENCE. This volume is Volume 11, meaning publication began in 1851. Duringthese early years, following the fall of Adventism from grace due to thedisappointment of the early 1840’s, many Adventist ideas were rejected in favorof a doctrine that became known as “AGE TO COME”. During this time, debateswere raging over the apparent unscriptural teaching of the “immortality of thesoul” and publishers of religious papers would contribute articles to otherpapers and were often quoted in other publisher’s periodicals. Such is the casewith this volume. A publisher well known to Bible Students was George Storrswho began his publication, the Bible Examiner, in the early 1850’s also. Storrsand his views were well known and not all his views were appreciated but thefact that he is quoted in this volume gives a glimpse into what he did believe,regardless of the fact that the editor of this volume discredits some things hepublished. It is clear from this publication that John Thomas also believed inthe mortality of the human soul, very similar to Storrs. The images I have provided will give a general view ofcontents. The pink post-it-notes are for easier referencing to the connectionto contemporary and later Bible Student doctrine. 1 & 2 – Shows the title page and the front page of this1861 volume with publication details 3 & 4 – Referencing the emerging doctrine of themortality of the human soul similar to George Storrs, published in his contemporarypaper, the Bible Examiner 5 – Interesting dissertation of Thomas examining GeorgeStorrs’ publication “The Bible Examiner”, hence the article prefaced by thewords “Bible Examinerism reviewed” which is 7 pages long 6 – interesting quotations from contemporary editions of theBible not readily available today, wherein the divine name “Jehovah” appears inthe main text at 2 Samuel 23:2, such asBoothboyd’s and Nathanael’s translations appearing on this page. Theserepresent earlier attempts to restore the divine name Jehovah to the main text,a work that would not be completed until the New World Translation published byJehovah’s Witnesses became available in the 1950’s. 7 – this is an 11 page article on the mortality of the human soul, by W D Jardine of Aberdeen Scotland, similar to Storrs’ belief. 8 & 9 – this article refers to George Storrs and thediffering views of “Baptism of the holy spirit” by these two editors. 10 & 11 - Interesting reference here to Exodus 3:14,15wherein God’s name is explained to Moses by Jehovah not as “I AM” as intraditional Bibles, but more correctly as “He Who Shall Be”, confirming what wehave in our New World Translation today. Interestingly, Bible translations suchas Byington’s made the same correction but this was not until early in the 20thcentury, fifty years later. 12 – The use of Jehovah’s name appears profusely throughoutthe publication as was common in the 1800’s. Follow the arrows on the post-it-notesin the direction of the arrows to see the divine name 13 – begins a fascinating article on an attempt to definethe end of the Gentile times, coming up with the date 1911, very close to what PastorRussell would later determine. 14 & 15 – shows the timeline of the seven timesdetermined upon Judah culminating in the year 1911 finishing with the end ofthe 1000 year rule of Christ in 2911. Truly fascinating considering this was1861. 16 – front cover of the book. The word “pamphlets” appearson the spine (which is quite worn), referring to the fact that two other pamphlethave been bound into the front and rear of this volume, one by John Thomas also,entitled “Anatolia”, which he published in 1854 discussing the prophecy ofDaniel and latter times, and is itself, 98 pages long. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own thisfabulous volume.I will attempt to answer any questions you may have, but understand, I have not read the entire book, but this lengthy overview should answer most questions.
