Description:

Theitem up for offers is a sleek modernist ‘Mariner’ weatherinstrument designed by Sir Kenneth Grange and retailed by GeorgJensen. The Mariner series was exhibited at the Council of IndustrialDesign exhibition “Design in Great Britain” (April 1 – May 31,1971) where it won a CoID Design Award. The device was made inEngland by the Taylor Instrument Company. It has two functions, athermometer for temperature and a hygrometer for humidity. The caseis solid extruded aluminum with a 25 micron anodized silver finishdesigned to withstand the rigors of a marine environment. The blackdial has white and gray scales and superb red and blue lollipopindicators. It includes the original bracket that allows for wallmounting. It feels like a solid piece, it feels well made and isrelatively heavy for its size. This weather station is a superbexample of 20th century British industrial design, have some fun andoffer!

NauticalInstruments for the Home

TaylorInstruments\' Mariner range of instruments is notable for manyreasons: its sophisticated appearance makes it entirely suitable forthe most modern home or office desk; the instruments are accurate;up-to-date production methods have been used; and the barometer inparticular represents a breakthrough in the way information ispresented. The range has already earned such substantial orders bothin Britain and from a number of European buyers that TaylorInstruments have been hard pressed to meet the demand.

Eachinstrument is housed separately in an extruded aluminium caseanodised in black or silver colour to a depth of 25 microns (thisstandard marine finish is necessary as the instruments are designedfor use on boats). The back panel is an injection moulding in highimpact black polystyrene, with the flash mark making the frictionfit. The crystal protecting the face is an acrylic injectionmoulding, and is concave to reduce light reflection. Red, blue andwhite are used as standard colours for the hands and dial marking, and a stainless steel bracket is provided with each instrument forwall-mounting.

Thethermometer/hygrometer uses large coils which are accurate to 1degree C and three per cent humidity, but only if an adequate airflow is maintained around the coils and the instrument: thus thelarge air space within the case, holes in the bottom and slots in theback plate ensure satisfactory response - provided that theinstrument is sited according to the detailed instruction leaflet.Care has been taken over details like putting 60 per cent humidity atthe six o\'clock position because acceptable humidity in Britain isbetween 50-70 per cent. On the thermometer predominance is given tocentigrade markings which are in white, while fahrenheit is shown ingrey.

Oneof Kenneth Grange\'s contributions was to design a special multi-sidedspring into which the crystal is simply pushed to be held firmly inposition. Grange had previously been appointed consultant industrialdesigner to Short and Mason (who were taken over by TaylorInstruments) through a recommendation from the CoID\'s DesignerSelection Service, his first job being the Ranger series ofbarometers.

Dimensions:

Thecase is about 3-5/16” by 3-5/16” and it’s about 2-3/16” deep(not including the bracket). It weighs about 14 ounces (392 grams).

(Note:measurements are approximate)

Condition:

Itis in good vintage condition. It shows age appropriate handling andstorage wear including light scuffs, scratches, and dings. The caseis in good shape with no dents or gouges, the edges are straight andsharp. The acrylic crystal has a few light scratches that are visiblein raking light. The dial and indicator hands look good. The goldring around the dial has wear and moderate finish loss. Thethermometer appears to be working. I put it in the fridge to test thegauges and the temperature and humidity levels both dropped. It’sover 50 years old at this point so no promises as to functionality oraccuracy. The pictures are the best indicator as to condition, pleaseuse the zoom feature and check them out.
