GLORIOUS GLACIER PARKGlacier NationalPark, located in the Northern Rockiesof Montana, was establishedby an Actof CongresssignedbyPresident Taft onMay 11, 1910. It isone ofthe oldestscenic wonders of our nation, dating back,geologicallyspeak-ing, some half-billion years ago, and yet, it remains fresh, clean and unspoiled, not showing the ravages that manytourist attractions do.Glacier Park's millionacres isconsideredby many as the most sublimewilderness inAmerica. With all of its primitive area Glacieris trulya versatilevacation land. Nestled amongsnow-cappedpeaks are magnifi-cent Swiss Chalet hotels where travelers may relax in rustic splendor. There are also modern motor inns, many campgrounds, and in the back country, two remaining chalets for hikers and horseback parties, which can be reached by trail only.Glacier Park doesn't get its name from the 60-odd masses of ice there now, but from the huge Ice Age Glaciers whichcarved its rugged scenery. More than a half mile deep, they covered all but the highest peaks .... like the GreenlandIcecap to-day. Grinding and tearing, they bulldozed the wide U-shaped valleys you see in Glacier to-day.To the North and the South the Continental Divide bisects Glacier Park, with streams flowing northward to Hudson Bay,eastward to the. Gulf of Mexico and westward to the Pacific Ocean. Bisecting the Park, east and west, is the fabulousGoing-to-the-Sun Road, said to be the most spectacular 50-mile drive in the United States, perhaps even in the world.Glacier Park has only 68 miles of paved roads, but 1000 miles of well-marked hiking trails. It is on these trails wherethe greatest rewards are found .... the colorful and fantastic geological formations, the never-ending floral displays, the wild life, the hidden glacier-fed lakes, roaring waterfalls, swift-flowing trout streams and the stands of fir, pine, aspenand birch. Most visitors to Glacier Park are intent on viewing, first, the magnificent scenery and, secondly, the flora and thefauna, and unless they drive rapidly through the Park, they are richly rewarded.Glacier Park has perhaps the greatest variety of wildlife of any area in America. There are 57 known species ofmammals, many of which have become extinct in other parts of the country. In this wildlife sanctuary the watchful hikermay see the mountain goat, the mighty big-horn sheep, mule and whitetail deer, .bear, elk, and, if fortunate, a view of amoose which is most common along the streams in the west side of the Park. Common among the smaller animals arethe squirrel, chipmunk, coyote, porcupine and beaver. The not-so-common animals that might be seen are the wolverine, wolf, fox, cougar, lynx and bobcat.Glacier Park has a wealth of bird life, over 200 species. Hawks, eagles and the handsome osprey can often be seensoaring overhead. The more common birds along the trails are bluebirds, grouse, warblers, purple finch, the pipit andthe fox and white-crown sparrows. To many bird lovers, the most interesting found in Glacier is the Water ouzel. ManyPark visitors are known to have hiked miles just to watch it perform in and around fast moving streams and waterfallsand to hear its beautiful voice. Probably the most popular bird in the Park is the white-tailed ptarmigan. Its plumage changeswith the seasons so that it continually blends into the background. One of Glacier Park's greatest attractions is its awe-inspiring floral display. Nowhere can be found a greaterabundance or variety of wildflowers. From early Spring when the glacier lilies carpet huge areas until late in the seasonwhen the purple aster comes forth there are hundreds of varieties that blanket meadows and mountain slopes. Theshowiest of the many flowers is the beargrass; a member of the lily family, it produces cream-colored blossoms clusteredin large pearshaped heads, sometimes attaining a height of 4 to 5 feet. There is an ever changing floral pattern as thesummer moves on. As the early blooms finish, others take their place so that the panorama in August is entirely differentthan that in June. A fragmentary list of showy and unusual Glacier flowers would include the calypso, alpine, buttercup, larkspur, columbine, lupine, wild geranium and hollyhock, red heather and the Indian paintbrush. The 250 lakes and hundreds of streams surrounded bythe unexcelled Glacier scenery isa fisherman'sparadise. Nolicense is required and the general season is extensive, from late May to mid-October. Thereare 22 kindsoffish foundin the Park's clear waters, but the finest game fish is thenative cutthroat trout which iswell-adaptedtothe cooltemperatures found in most of the waters.Rich in Indian heritage the history of Glacier is full of colorful legends as many of the place names would indicate:Bad Marriage Mountain, Going-to-the-Sun Road, Gunsight Pass, Singleshot Mountain and Two Medicine Lake. To-day theBlackfeet Reservation adjoins the Park on the East, serving as a reminder of the day when they dominated the entire region. The Canadianborder forms the northernboundary of Glacier National Park. Adjoining Glacier to theNorth is theCanadian NationalPark, Waterton Lakes NationalPark, 204 square miles of beautiful unspoiled landscape, not unlikethat of Glacier Park. In 1932, under the sponsorship of the Alberta and Montana Rotary International Clubs/the Govern-ments of the United States and Canada united Glacier Park and Waterton Park and proclaimed this union to be knownas the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, the first international peace park in the world. Each year, the last week-end of July, Rotarians from both sides of the border meet and with their impressive Hands Across the Border Ceremonrenew their pledgeof friendship, an inspirationtothe world that nations with a common boundary can livein peace andharmony. No morefitting area could be foundtoperpetuate international good-will than Waterton-GlacierInternationalPeace Park where nature has concentrated her finest riches.,aDistributed by Glacier Park, Inc.A COLOURPICTURE PUBLICATION, BOSTON 30, MASS.ONE OF THE popular —TRAVEL SERIES14383
