This is fine example of an early Italian Gesso frame featuring a Vincent Nesbert print of Charlotte Augusta Flower.
Charlotte Augusta Flower was the Duchess of Marlborough. Born in 1818, she married the Duke, George Spencer-Churchill on 10 Jun, 1846. She died in 1850, and is buried in Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire England.
The actual painting was completed by John Hayter and published in 1941. Artist Vincent Nesbert, born in 1898, emigrated to the United States, and studied at The Carnegie Institute and the National Academy of Design.
His work was exhibited in various early years, 1922-1931, at the Carnegie International Exhibition.
This was probably sold as an English memento of the Duchess.
Without taking it apart, this print appears to be canvas mounted. There is some discoloration of the print, which you can see in my photos.
A collector purchasing this item may instead by purchasing this for the unique frame. This frame is in amazingly nice condition and would make for an outstanding wall presentation in it\'s own right.
Italian Gesso frames were used extensively during the late Victorian era and the early 1900s. Gesso is made from chalk, gypsum and pigments, shaped for decoration on wood panels. It is often decorated in gold, bronze or similar colors.
This piece measures about 5.5\" tall, 4.75\" wide. It will accommodate a photo of about 4\" tall, 3\" wide. It comes from a local estate.
