Photograph, image size 8x14 inches, mounted to board, finish size 9x15 inches. c1920s. Titled \"Mt Tacoma\" [Mt Rainier] on bottom of board. Eight climbers/hikers on the slopes of Rainier. Caption on back reads \"Guide Hans Fuhrer is to right of centre, alone.\" Very good condition.

Hans Fuhrer was a renowned guide on Rainier for many years. Born in Switzerland, he moved to the US with his brother Henry (also a climbing guide). Hans completed more than 150 ascents of Mount Rainier and more than 100 of Mount Hood. On July 2, 1920 Hans, Henry, Joseph Hazard and several othrs made a first ascent of what is now called the Fuhrer Route/Fuhrer Finger on Rainier. Hans had \"discovered\" the route via telescope. From 1926-1932 the brothers guided in Jasper National park for Canadian National Railway (where they made many first ascents), then later independently. (Peakfinder.com)
