Circa 1918 postcard-size card with hand-drawn and colored Indian head insignia used by the Lafayette Escadrille, signed by french Lafayette Escadrille mechanic Jean Bordes to his wife or girlfriend with a message to keep it as a souvenir for the future.
This is an amazing piece of Lafayette Escadrille history, featuring the early version of the Seminole Indian head used by the squadron. Hand drawn and colored with ink and watercolor (?). The only other example of this card I have seen is in the Charles Dolan collection at the National Museum of the United States Air Force. As these were hand made, their copy is slightly different but essentially the same. It can be viewed on their website. I have provided a screenshot with this listing.
Jean Eloi Bordes served as a mechanic with Escadrille 124 and his service cards can be found on the Memoires des Hommes website. One of his cards has his signature, which matches the one found on the front of the card alongside the Indian head insignia. His second card lists his attachment to 124.
The size of the card is 3.5\" x 5.5\"
The message on the back of the card roughly translates to:
\"My dear / How do you find our squadron badge? Keep it carefully, it will serve as a souvenir later. Affectionate kisses to take xxx - / Your Jean\"
This is an extremely rare piece and would be an excellent addition to any Lafayette Escadrille or WWI aviation collection. Guaranteed original and to the period stated.
