Wallowa Lakeis aribbon lake1 mile south ofJoseph, Oregon, United States, at an elevation of 4,372ft. Impounded by high moraines, it was formed by a series ofPleistoceneglaciers. The Wallowa Lake area was inhabited by the Wallowa band of theNez Perce tribeprior to the exploration of the area and the formation of the U.S. State ofOregon. The lake and its surrounding area was guaranteed to the Nez Perce as part of the Treaty of 1855. This lasted until the discovery of gold in the area and the subsequent rush. . . a long history of resistance arose, you can read more about it on the web . . .
