Cobb, Tailor concerning the American John Widdicombe, who has been at Oxford and \"knows a great deal about tailoring for women\". John Widdicombe attended Oxford between 1934 and 1936, therein the attribution of c.1935 for this letter from Oliver to Widdicombe. The letter from Oliver to Cobb reveals that when she first came to England (Cobb) made Mary a suit. \"The material was nice and it was well cut but it lacked style. Mr. Widdicombe could be very valuable to you about this. If he designs for you I will get my suits from you again and send all my friends to you.\" Mary goes on to suggest that \"Mr. Widdicombe has a large circle of friends who admire good tailoring and he would bring you very good customers. He is very talented and I am sure he would be well worth your consideration\". The letter is signed, \"Faithfully Yours, Mary Oliver\"
Although it is not known how Widdicombe became acquainted with Mary Oliver, we do know that John attended the University of Virginia in the 1920s where he met and befriended Paul Bowles(1910-1999). We also know that Paul and Jane Bowles were acquainted with Mary Oliver and Pembroke Lodge, along with other artists such as Eileen Agar(1899-1991), Joseph Bard(1886-1975), Dikush de Rohan(1898-1975) and others. So, perhaps Paul Bowles is the common denominator? Source: elisarolle.com
Another clue: In a 1932 letter to Paul Bowles, Widdicombe writes, \"In London I again saw the Olivers who I find more and more lovely - she is so lovely I think. And when I returned from Ireland I stayed there a couple of days.\" This suggests that a connection between the Oliver\'s (John Scott and Mary) and John Widdicombe took place well before Mary\'s letter to Cobb was written.
John Scott Oliver and his wife Mary lived at Pembroke Lodge from 1928-1938. John Oliver died in 1938 and it is not known how much longer Mary Oliver remained in residence. Source: Wiki
