From a local estate sale: a pair of ladies undersleeves dating from the mid-1800s. These were detachable units that attached inside the sleeve to give a fresh look or updated appearance for an occasion; these would have been for a special occasion indeed, since the flounces that would be visible at the cuffs are made of handmade Honiton lace. The sleeves have a top part measuring about 12\" long by 6\" across the top of each; they are made of fine netting, with a seam down the inside. At the base each has a deep flared cuff of Honiton lace that is about 9\" at the cuff end and 6\" where attached to the netting. The beautiful floral lace with its scalloped edge would show under the regular sleeve. These would have been highly prized after Queen Victoria chose Honiton lace for her wedding veil in 1840.
These undersleeves are in very good antique condition; they have mellowed to a cream color. I found at least one broken bride, shown in the last photo, and two holes in the net of one sleeve as well as two places where the seam of the other has come unstitched - all shown in the last several photos. But the lace cuffs are in very good condition - soft and supple, not brittle, and holding together well. These are quite a find! They would be lovely used in historical costume display, or work them into a wedding gown, or simply frame them to enjoy. Thanks to my lace mentor for helping me identify the Honiton.
