DETAILS: Early Zimbabwe revolutionary button. Circa 1974. We believe this button was issued by the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) sometime in 1975. Measures 2 1/2" inches.


Chimurenga is a word in the Shona language meaning "revolutionary struggle" or uprising. It typically is a reference to the Zimbabwean War of Independence.Prior to 1960's the term referred to the Ndebele and Shona insurrections against the administration of the British South Africa Company during the1890s (the Second Matabele War, or First Chimurenga). However in the 1960's it became a battle cry of ZAPU members in their nationalistguerrilla war against the predominantly white Rhodesian government during (the Rhodesian Bush War, or Second Chimurenga/Imvukela).
