The singular X-MEN series to have earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records -- an honor which it still maintains -- is, of course, the blockbuster mega-selling second volume of X-Men by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee. The series launched at the close of the Copper Age in 1991 and ran for 10 years, becoming Grant Morrison's game-changing New X-Men in 2001 and then, following Grant's departure, was again retitled to X-Men Legacy in mid-2008.
While the many variant covers for X-Men #1, along with the series' first dozen issues and a select few after those, remain highly-desired X-Men collectibles to this very day, X-Men #11 and it's instantly classic Jim Lee cover stands out as a fan-favorite. A tightly-framed team portrait with WOLVERINE's unmissable yellow duds at the front, X-Men #11 has continually been a sought-after issue for years.
That long-standing certainty has changed recently, however, due in no small part to the fantastic approval of Marvel Studios' new animated X-MEN '97 series, which features much of the same cast as Lee's cover and continues the exploits of the X-Men team from X-Men: The Animated Series, a cartoon directly inspired by Claremont and Lee's X-Men, which hit the stands and comics shops just before it hit the Fox Kids airwaves.
Moreover, the story by Claremont found within the issue's pages was, to some degree, adapted by X-Men '97, appearing as the series' fourth episode on Disney+. Featuring JUBILEE and the as-yet codename-absent SUNSPOT in a battle for their life inside the MOJO-verse, the episode mirrors the situation the X-Men themselves must face in X-Men #11. While the new animated series omitted DAZZLER's presence in its tale, had Jubilee become pregnant before the episode was over, the comparisons between it and Claremont's story would be all the more uncanny.
