Woodland Style Ceramic Pipe - Handmade Studio Pottery:
$45.00

This is a handmade smoking pipe thatI created in clay. It\'s all hand built.Although I repeat some characters and styles, notwo are the same. You will get a functional pipe like no other and is built to last a lifetime. I strive to make each piece aesthetically pleasing, detailed (more than you see at first glance)unique and functional (my pipes draw very well). This pipe is glazedand was fired to cone 6(2232 degrees F) which makes it very durable. There is no lead, or anything toxic in the clay or glazes once it\'s fired. The stem hole is large enough that it shouldn\'t clog, and will clean easily if desired. Each piece is signed and dated. This one is almost 5 1/2\" long and a screen for the bowl is included.Requests for custom orders are welcome.I hope you find this as enjoyable to own, as I did making it.

If you feel the need after you receive it, it can be cleaned with alcohol or hot, soapy water without doing any damage to it.

By purchasing this pipe you agree and confirm that you are of at least legal age to purchase smoking pipes in your state. You also confirm that this pipe is legal for sale in your area. You assume any and all liability if you breach this confirmation.

Pottery making is long process. The pottery piece has to be completely dry before it\'s fired in a kiln to a temperature of about 1945 degrees f, that allows the piece to be handled and glazed. Brushing on glaze takes 3 coats for each color, and when I fire 45 - 85 pieces at a time for firing a kiln load, it\'s labor intensive and time consuming. The piece is fired again to 2232 degrees f to melt the glaze onto the piece and harden the clay completely, making it vitrified. Many also think that clay has more character. Glazed clay pipes smoke every bit as well as glass or better. And because of the clay body, is sturdier than glass, not many people eat onglass dinner plates.

Why Smoke a clay pipe?

1. Clay pipes are more forgiving: The material from which they are made is not flammable, so one need not beconcerned if one has a habit of smoking too hot. Burnout is impossible. Since clay pipes tend to have longer and denser stems, they have a higher specific heat(meaning they can absorb more heat) and radiate heat more readily thanBriar or glass, even if one is smoking too hot and hard, it is unlikely that tonguebite will be an issue for most materials (some tobaccos would bite you evenif you just sprinkled them on an incense burner)- Ceramic suffers abuse more stoically than either Briar or Meerschaum, but not as much as glass. While it is true thatmy clay pipes are not brittle, they areunlikely to survive a fall onto a hard floor, but it\'s unlikely that you will damage your pipethrough over-vigorous applicationof your pipe tool. My clay pipes aren\'t as heavy as they might look, only a few ounces.

2. Clay pipes do not require any break-in period or seasoning to
smoke well. No cake is necessary, and the clay being incapable of
burning while you smoke it does not influence the flavor of the material.
While a seasoned clay pipe does smoke a little better than a fresh one, the
difference is not a great one, and a new clay pipe comes essentially \"ready
to rock\" with whatever material you choose to put in it.

3. The absence of any foreign material (burning Briar, flavors from the
curing oil in Meerschaum) in your smoke will result in a brighter, clearer
flavor, making clay pipes an excellent way to sample new smoking material or simply
to rediscover an old favorite.

About me: I started in pottery in 1971 as a senior in high school. When my friends were getting their first car, I bought my first kiln. For the most part, I\'m self taught. I\'ve worked at 3 different pottery studios over the years and learned more throwing and glazing techniques as I worked. I\'m not a production potter, I try to make interesting and unusual pieces that are functional. I\'m coming off an 18 year hiatus and I\'m back to it, and also getting reacquainted with firing Raku pottery. I also make wall pockets, wall hangings, teapots, mugs, bowls, plates and other functional ware.
