Up for sale is an extremely rare 1938 letter signed by aviation pioneer William J. Tate. The letter is written on Department of the Commerce, Lighthouse Service, in his official capacity as Superintendent of Lighthouses.
Tate was instrumental is assisting Wilbur and Orville Wright in assembling their aircraft at Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
In this letter he is responding to a Peter Sutherland, who wrote to Tate to ask his permission to name an aviation club after him. He mentions that he would like to get up to New York where the club would be established, and his statement is chilling. He writes \"I expect to visit N.Y. at that time if I am living and I don\'t feel much like I will kick off before that time\". Unfortunately, Mr. Tate would tragically pass away six years later in 1944 when his plane crashed into the Chesapeake Bay while testing large caliber bombs.
