"Red Barry", along with "Dan Dunn" and "Secret Agent X-9", was one of many crime-theme strips to grab onto the yellow coat tails of Chester Gould's "Dick Tracy". This compilation of Sunday strips by Will Gould provides a glimpse into the career of one of Tracy's competitors, the flame-haired, former football star and deep undercover man, Red Barry. "Red Barry" anticipates the relationship between Denny Colt and police commissioner Dolan in Will Eisner's "The Spirit" in that only the Chief knows that Barry is working for the forces of law and order. "Ouchy Mugouchy", Barry's young pal, is clearly modelled after Junior from Dick Tracy, and Gould seems to be channeling Sax Rohmer in the two stories that largely unfold in Chinatown. Four stories from the mid-1930s that by today's woke standards are not politically correct and thus are a real delight for those looking for fresh stories that don't appear written by a committee of generation z robots.
