US Army Air Force Wooden Cigarette Case
Description...- This is a rare, hard to find personal item, which was used by my father.
- The wooden case holds 10 cigarettes; and to my surprise, two have remained stored inside it for more than 50 years.
- Thetop closure/cover is carved as a propeller; it rotates to open the case.
- The case is 5 inches wide by 3½ inches wings and propeller insignia on the front has pieces chipped off.
- The case has not been cleaned.
- There is minor cosmetic wear such as scuffs, scratches and stains,which may resolve with detailing.
- The case is structurally rigid and strong.
- The lid spins smoothly and remains in place as intended.
- Except for the chips on the insignia, there are no cracks or signs of repair.
- Please review the listing photos for your own many young men did with the outbreak of WWII, my father enlisted and entered the Navy. In 1943, not long after completing Naval Air Tactical Training, he was assigned to the Pacific Theater, primarily as a tail gunner and navigator on a Douglas SBD Dauntless, for dive bombing and naval scout missions. At the close of the war, he was aboard the USS Cumberland Sound when it entered Tokyo Bay on August 28, 1945, several days prior to the formal surrender signing by Emperor Hirohito.
In 1946, my father re-enlisted entering the Army, specifically the Army Air Force (USAAF). Then in 1947, USAAF became known as the Air Force (USAF), where he spent the remainder of his military service.
Post WWII, his career focused on secured cryptographic communications, along with long range large format photography. He had numerous assignments and duty stations, including the harsh cold weather environments of Alaska and Greenland, in addition to extremes of heat and humidity in Central America and the Caribbean.
Prior to his retirement in 1967, my father was the senior NCO at Offutt AFB, SAC Headquarters, responsible for communications working in the lowest level underground. More specifically, his primary role was employing cryptography to ensure secured communications, along with daily operation of \"Looking Glass\" -- the airborne backup Strategic Air Command communications headquarters.
