PBY Catalina Black Cat pilot signed Season Greetings Christmas card.

From:

U.S. NAVAL AIR STATION QUONSET POINT, RHODE ISLAND


It has a color lithograph print of a PBY Catalina on the inside of the card. It is covered with a small piece of tissue paper. It is signed simply “Lee”.


He was doing patrols in Newfoundland before being transferred to the Pacific in December 9 of 1941. So this card is thought to be from 1941.

More information on pilot.

This is from us from a letter to the Chief Of Personnel in 1946, which recounts some of his record:

27 January 1941. Completed entire course and was commissioned

4 August 1941, qualified as third pilot in patrol type air-craft (PBY).

Reported to Patron 71 on 25 August 1942 at Argentia, New-found land.

Assigned to a flight crew as second pilot immediately.

From day of reporting to 9 Desenber 1941 took part in anti-submarine and convoy-escort patrols in North Atlantic fron Nova Scotia to Ireland and Labrador.

On 9 Decenber 1941 squadron ordered to Kaneohe Bay, T.H.

Arriving 26 December 1941. Conducting anti-submarine and surface patrols and convoy escort in PBY-5’s until 1 May 1942, with one ferrying flight fron San Diego to Kaneohe Bay in the period 19 March to 11 April 1942•

On May 1, 1942 ordered to Noumes, New Caledonia for anti-surface patrols taking part in Battle of the Coral Sea.

Returned to Kaneohe Bay, T.H. on 25 July 1942. Designated a Patrol Plane Commander by direction of my Commanding Office on 6 August 1942, with rank of It.
