WWII JAPANESE TYPE 95 NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICER’S SWORD – BULLET STRUCK:

This is a very nice World War II Japanese battle-damagedType 95 Non-Commissioned Officer’s sword that is in excellent condition. The aluminum handle retains approximately 60% of the original OD brown painted finish with the remainder having been worn from the high spots. The paint that remains in the low areas of the simulated lace grip wrapping is faded and worn. There is a spring latch affixed to the handle that passes through the tsuba and would have fit into a notch at the top edge of the scabbard to hold it securely in place. The fuchi is of copper and marked with the symbols for Gifu, Nagoya, and Kokura arsenal. The blade is marked with the Tokyo First Arsenal stamp and number, ‘72090’ in front of the tsuba and above the fuller. These features identify the sword as a third pattern piece and dates it from approximately 1938 to mid-1941.
Mid-way down the blade is an indentation along the upper edge that was obviously caused by the impact of what appears to have been a U.S. .45 caliber round fired by either a Thompson sub machine gun or a model 1911 automatic pistol. The impact has misshaped the blade to the point that it now has a distinct wave to it at the point of impact. The finish on the blade is with a smooth, even brown patina along its full length. There is no scabbard with this sword, and it remains just as it was taken and brought back by MM1c Luther Badger Rowe, USN from the island of New Hebrides. It remains a fine-looking, battle damaged example that must have been shot out of the hand of the attacking Japanese NCO who wielded it.8379
