Offered here is a WWI era M1899bayonet for the Swiss Schmidt-Rubin M1889/96 rifles. The serial number is #437572. This also comes with a metal scabbard. The ridge near the base of the fuller was added to help retain the bayonet in its scabbard.
Overall, this bayonet is in Good - Very Good condition, considering its age. The press catch is functional with average spring tension. However, the mortise has been bent out of shape. We don\'t have a rifle to test this on so we are not sure if it will correctly lock into place, but it looks like it may. Both the pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They have impact marks and scattered oxidation. The rivets securely fasten the two grip panels and have light oxidation. The wood grip panels have scattered light compressions and draglines. The wood has darkened with age.
The spine, sides and fullers have light scrapes, but no notable damage. The blade has been sharpened at some point. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The finish is in the white.
The ricasso on the right is marked \"WAFFENFABRIK / NEUHAUSEN\". The right side guard is marked \"437572\".
The metal scabbard is in Good - Very Good condition. The mouth, body and finial have light scrapes and oxidation. There are a few impact marks. The frog stud loop is securely attached. The finish is mostly gone, possibly removed?
There are no visible markings.
This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your Swiss WWI rifle, or a bayonet collection in general. As with all used items, a light cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards. Please see our photographs for a better understanding of the contents and its condition.
