Joseph Manchin III(born August 24, 1947) is an American politician and businessman serving as theseniorUnited States senatorfromWest Virginia, a seat he has held since 2010. A member of theDemocratic Party, Manchin was the 34thgovernor of West Virginiafrom 2005 to 2010 and the 27thsecretary of state of West Virginiafrom 2001 to 2005. He became the state's senior U.S. senator whenJay Rockefellerretired in 2015. Manchin has called himself a "centrist, moderate, conservative Democrat" and is generally cited as the most conservative Democrat in the Senate.[1]Before entering politics, Manchin helped found and was the president of Enersystems, a coal brokerage company his family owns and operates.[2]Manchin is known for working with congressionalRepublicanson issues such asabortion,immigration,energy policy, andgun control.[3][4][5][6]

In recent years West Virginia has become one of the most Republican states in the country, but Manchin has continued to see electoral success. He won the2004 West Virginia gubernatorial electionby a large margin and was reelected by an even larger margin in2008. Manchin won the2010special election to fill the Senate seat vacated by incumbent DemocratRobert Byrd's death with 53% of the vote, and in2012was elected to a full term with 61% of the vote. He won a second term in2018with just under 50% of the vote. Manchin has been the only Democrat holding statewide or congressional office in West Virginia since 2021.[7]

After the2020 elections, Manchin became the "most important swing vote" in the Senate,[11]which is split 50–50 between Democrats and Republicans, but controlled by Democrats becauseVice PresidentKamala Harrisis the tiebreaker.
