Wounaan weaver Cristina Negria Teucama is one of the most celebrated artists of Wounaan woven art. She lives in a small community on the outskirts of Panama City, alongside some other villagers who have left the remoteness of the Darien Rainforest in order to be closer to amenities offered by proximity to the city. She is originally from Sinai, a small village deep in the Darien, where she saw other women weave and develop their craft. Cristina is an astute observer, and learned by watching other artist weave their baskets. She often weaves alongside her 2 sisters, Miriam and Dalia, also master weavers known for their colorful bird and butterfly motifs.

Cristina has been creating butterfly, PARROT AND MACAW designs for over 20 years, with big bold colorful wings and softly curved leaves. She thinks these are the most beautiful designs to make, and her pride of workmanship shows through all of the bright colors and perfectly woven details. Often her butterflies will surround a basket and each will have a unique design on their wings, some with spots, some with stripes, and big colorful birds that perch around the sides.

Weaving is Cristina’s only income, and she prepares all of the materials herself before starting on a project – which often will take many months up to several years to complete.
