Original Art signed by Wolo, accompanied by autograph notes by the other authors, all dedicated to book dealer and author Rose Oller Harbaugh
Original Art signed twice: \"To/Rose Oller Harbaugh/from Sir Archibald/and Amanda and/Wolo/May 23/1942\", 1 page, front and verso, 7½x11¼. Above the inscription is Wolo\'s color drawing of his puppet and children\'s book characters, Sir Archibald and Amanda. He has also signed the artwork: \"Wolo/42\". On verso are three Autograph Notes signed: \"To Rose Oller: I wish you would drive or hitchhike to Bowling Green so that we might sit in the shade drinking lemonade and tell you how much we both enjoyed/being with you today - You are so good to us. All good wishes/Duncan and Emilie Hines [He has signed for both.]/6-27-44\"; \"A cordial invitation to Dinner at Belmont/A. L. Crabb/June 27, 1942\" and \"To Rose Oller - In appreciation for the marvelous book display of my humble effort./Private Dave Breger (Sgt.), June 1942\". Breger has also drawn his cartoon character (also a self-caricature), \"Private Breger.\" WOLFF von FALKENSTEIN (1902-1989), born of German nobility, moved to the United States in the 1920s and became a US citizen rather than return to Hitler\'s Germany. Living in Los Angeles and then San Francisco, Falkenstein became a cartoonist for the San Francisco Examiner, a popular puppeteer, and the author of many children\'s books. Sir Archibald and Amanda were characters in his books, and were also prominent among his puppets. Whether or not Wolo ever changed his name officially, he insisted on going by that, in part as a rejection of his aristocratic ancestry. DUNCAN HINES (1880-1959), who worked as a traveling salesman for various companies, kept a notebook of notable restaurants he encountered in his travels. Adventures in Good Eating, first published in 1936, was a regularly updated, widely read restaurant guide for travelers. When the Duncan Hines name came to be associated with quality food in the 1940s, Hines lent his name to hundreds of food products, including cake mixes. ALFRED LELAND CRABB (1884-1980) was a prolific Kentucky author. From his titles, such as Dinner at Belmont, Supper at the Maxwell House and Breakfast at the Hermitage, one might assume he was a food critic, especially since he signed on the same date as Duncan Hines. However, his books were actually novels of the Civil War and Reconstruction eras in Kentucky and Tennessee. DAVE BREGER had appeared briefly as a Saturday Evening Post cartoonist before being drafted by the US Army. Army life became the principal subject of his cartoons, which appeared in Yank and Stars and Stripes, the Army newspapers. His Private Breger lampooned army life and dimwitted officers, themes he continued even as he was commissioned a lieutenant. His cartoons were made into popular postcards, and a compilation was published in 1944 as Private Breger: the Original G.I. Joe. ROSE OLLER HARBAUGH, herself the author of cookbooks and children\'s books, and an officer of the American Book Dealers\' Association, was for many years the manager of the bookstore of Marshall Fields Department Store in Chicago. She hosted book signings and other events for many prominent authors, and collected notes and signatures from her literary guests. Lightly toned at edges. Binding holes at right edge. Otherwise, fine condition.See more material from these signers:WOLO ALFRED LELAND CRABB DUNCAN HINES DAVE BREGER See more listings in our AUTHORS (1,875) category.
