He accuses Governor Clinton of politics in military promotions.
ALS: "Wm Paulding Junr", 1p, 5x3¾. (New York), 1823 March 21. To Ogden Edwards Esq. (addressed to him by Paulding on verso). In full: "It will readily occur to you after you shall have read the enclosed statement, that a principal object with Gov. Clinton, in his military arrangements, of June 1818, was to elevate his political friends, and to depress his republican opponents. And, in accordance with this measure, to place, as far as was practicable, the military of this City under federal control." Brigadier General of Militia WILLIAM PAULDING, JR. (1770-1854) served in the War of 1812 after serving a term in Congress (1811-1813). Republican, later Whig, OGDEN EDWARDS (1781-1862) was a City Surrogate and later a Supreme Court Circuit Judge. He was a grandson of theologian Jonathan Edwards. Federalist DeWITT CLINTON was Governor of New York from 1817-1821 and 1825-1828. Republican-Democrat Paulding later served as Mayor of New York City (1824-1826). Tanned and sporadically shaded. Upper right corner missing. Top edge slightly nicked.
