WHITELAW REID HANDWRITTEN LTR. SIGNED, \"I am Very Respectfully, Whitelaw Reid\", 8 x 4.5, on his personal \"The Tribune Office\" letterhead, New York, 6 February 1880, to Revd Jessie S. Gilbert, In full: \"Dear Sir: I have pleasure in complying with the courteous request in your favor of the 5th inst.\", by U. S. vice-president nominee, managing editor ofHorace Greeley\'s New York Tribune, Ambassador to France and Great Britain, and author of a popular history of Ohio in the Civil War. In fine condition, with age toning, a few stains along edges, and mounting remnants on the reverse.

Whitelaw Reid (1837-1912)was the managing editor of the \"New York Tribune\" in 1869, becoming the owner and editor-in-chief of the paper after Horace Greeley\'s death in 1872. After the Republicans won the White House later in 1888, Reid was appointed Minister to France, serving from 1889-1892. In 1892, Reid was theRepublican nominee for Vice President, running with President Harrison who was seeking reelection. Harrison-Reid lost to Cleveland-Stevenson in the November 8, 1892 election. Reid later served as was Ambassador to Great Britain, serving from 1905 until his death in London in 1912. He is also theauthor of a popular history of Ohio in the U.S. Civil War. #11387
