On offer here is an original autograph letter signed by Whitelaw Reid, former newspaper editor, politician and author. The letter is on 'New York Tribune' stationery and is mounted to a larger sheet.

Whitelaw Reid(October 27, 1837 – December 15, 1912) was an American politician and newspapereditor, as well as the author of Ohio in the War, a popular work of history.

After assistingHorace Greeley as editor of the New-York Tribune, Reid purchased the paperafter Greeley's death in late 1872 and controlled it until his own death. Thecirculation grew to about 60,000 a day, but the weekly edition became lessimportant. He invested heavily in new technology, such as the Hoe rotaryprinting press and the linotype machine, but bitterly fought against the unionizedworkers for control of his shop.

As a famousvoice of the Republican Party, he was honored with appointments as ambassadorto France and Great Britain, as well as numerous other honorific positions.Reid was the party's nominee for Vice President of the United States in the1892 election. In 1898, President William McKinley appointed him to theAmerican commission that negotiated peace with Spain after the Spanish–AmericanWar.
