2 Pcs: Vintage Aircraft Parts/Experiments

From the Collection of Edward Burke Wilford

[ FEATURES AND DETAILS... ]

PROVENANCE: These two loose pieces were purchased at an sale in Pennsylvania where they were selling items that came from the collection of inventor Col. Edward Burke Wilford III--of gyroplane fame.

I have listed more items from Mr. Wilford\'s collection. To see what is still available, search for: \"EDWARD BURKE WILFORD\"

1.) The helicopter/gyrocopter-type rotor\'s total length is about 23\". It is very professionally cut or stamped from sheet metal, crafted, and riveted together. It was most likely a piece from his shop, used for his gyrocopter experiments.

2.) The other item started life as a helicopter-type toy in the 1950s, which Wilford apparently proceeded to modify for his experiments by adding a model airplane engine (not currently functional). It was the \"Rotary Space Ship\" toy invented and marketed by Lawrence Wesley Brown before his own death in 1960 (when there was an explosion at his Brown Mfg. Co. factory while he was inside). Brown\'s device was powered by a small rocket engine with a fuse (similar to a firecracker or flare). Edward Wilford modified this one to be powered by the airplane engine instead of a rocket engine. (See the included photo, which shows what the original toy looked like with its box.) For more information on L.W. Brown and his toy ...

More on COL. EDWARD BURKE WILFORD III: He was born in Philadelphia and raised in Merion Station, Pennsylvania. He graduated from The Haverford School in 1943. After an additional two years of study while serving in the Army reserve, he attended West Point, graduated in 1949, and then joined the Air Force flight school to become a jet pilot and the head of his squadron in the Korean War. After the war, he returned to civilian work, though still very active as an aeronautical engineer. He repeatedly appeared before the U.S. Government at various subcommittee meetings and other forums through the 1950s while advocating for the engineering concepts he pioneered. He moved his family to the Washington, D.C. area in 1962 to work for companies serving the defense sector and later at several government agencies, but later returned to live in Pennslvania. Col. Wilford filed numerous patents, most of which were related to his main focus: gyroplanes (a.k.a. autogyros). His company built, successfully flew, and also sold many of these craft.

ACCOMPANYING MATERIAL INCLUDED (all are reprints):

- Edward Wilford\'s obituary from 2018

- Full 5-page printout of the original patent application for Brown\'s toy, which was filed in 1939. It consists of 2 pages of drawings (including plan, elevation and section views and details of the rotor mechanism), followed by 3 pages of description.

- A four-page article from Vertiflite Magazine, dated Sept./Oct. 2018 (3 months before Wilford\'s death), with a section about Edward Burke Wilford

[ CONDITION... ]

- Beautiful vintage condition -- from a non-smoking environment.

- As mentioned above, the toy was modified from its original form: removing the wheels and adding a model airplane engine. So it is not complete as originally sold.

- The model aircraft engine is not currently functional.

The above is my good-faith attempt to disclose all noteworthy issues. Keep in mind that vintage/antique items always show their age. (Don\'t we all!?) It would be impossible to mention every tiny detail, so please expect that there will be something about this item (or lot) that\'s not perfect and may need touch-up.
