Okay, so here\'s something I know nothing about. It\'s what I believe to be a vintage abacus, probably mid-century modern era.
I\'m guessing it is Korean based on the name, Hwang Ju. But chances are I\'m wrong 😕 I don\'t even know if I have the end label in the correct direction. Forgive my ignorance please.
It\'s a 23 digits/23 rods instrument. I\'m not sure what kind of wood was used to make it but it\'s lightweight. The tan beads or balls could be birch. The frame is lacquered black.
It measures 13\" long, 2½\" wide, and about ¾\" thick. There\'s a small piece of red string tied to the back.
It has a fitted case made of lightly padded faux leather that snaps closed. There is a loop on the side near the opening end. The words Hwang Ju Abacus along with Asian character letters, and an image of a marine seal 🦭logo are printed in white on the front of the cover.
It\'s in excellent condition, possibly unused. The case has some age discoloration at the interior of the opening.
