A personal handwritten letter to Volkswagen of America from Mrs. Carson Brooks.
It says:
Dear Sir:
After seeing your unusual and offbeat Advertisement of Volkswagens, it seems that we own one that may be of interest to you.Below are the facts about our Volkswagen:Purchased: DePaul Motors, Gadsden, Ala. 1961.Model: 1959.Mileage: 605,798 (only two engine changes).Travels: Over 300 miles per day, 5 days per week.Thank you;Mrs. Carson Brooks, 210 East 4th St., Oxford, Ala.
Ad page measures 9 3/4\" x 13 3/16\".Paper has yellowed with age, and has several minor wrinkles or bends.Reverse side shows Editor, Publisher, Writers Panel and 1/2 page ad for Holland House, the original cocktail mix.

In 1959, Volkswagen of America, Inc., began to advertise seriously--humorously. \"What a happy day for Volkswagen it turned out to be,\" Huston Horn wrote in Sports Illustrated. \"Volkswagen ads have won a list of prizes longer than an account executive\'s expense account: they are talked about at cocktail parties, read aloud at the office water cooler, analyzed and dissected in college term papers...\" Sales Management credits the advertising with having \"identity and personality...like the Bug itself...Car and campaign combine to stir comment and wisecracks out of all proportion to the size of either.\"\"The average American,\" Sales Management said, \"may be somewhat confused by Comets, Corvairs, Darts, Falcons, Hawks, Larks, Ramblers, Tempests, Valiants--not to mention such imports as Austin-Healeys, Fiats, Jaguars, MGs, Mercedes-Benzes, Peugeots, Renaults, Saabs, Triumphs and Volvos. But chances are he\'ll know one little bug by its changeless shape, and even know that its engine is rearward and aircooled.\"Everyone, in short, seems to know Volkswagen\'s advertisements--and to have a favorite one. There\'s the \"Think Small\" ad and the \"Lemon\" headline, the \"Why Won\'t Your Wife Let You Buy This Car? ad for the boxlike station wagon, the \"Ugly Is Only Skin-deep\" confession, and the ad which showed no car at all, but which headlined beneath a blank space, \"We Don\'t Have Anything to Show You in Our New Models.\" The list has become a long one today and there are Americans who read Volkswagen ads in a magazine before they get down to reading the editorial content itself. Such people see to have unbounded confidence in the high quality of each ad and they expect to get a chuckle out of each new one that appears. A teacher in a New Hampshire school gave expression to the general attitudes, writing to Volkswagen of America, \"...we all think you\'re tops in the advertising field.
