Documentation:
The Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn (VRB), until 1969 Rigibahn, is a Swiss standard-gauge cog railway that runs from Vitznau to the Rigi. Together with the Arth-Rigi-Bahn (ARB), which runs on the other side of the mountain, and the Weggis-Rigi Kaltbad (LWRK) cable car coming from Weggis, it has formed the Rigi-Bahnen Aktiengesellschaft ( rb ) since 1992. The Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn (VRB) was opened on 21. Opened in May 1871 under the name Rigibahn as the first mountain railway in Europe. The first cogwheel railway in Europe had already started operating in the Ostermundigen quarry in 1870. The quarry railway was only officially opened in October 1871 for marketing reasons. The Vitznau-Rigi Railway was built by the engineers Niklaus Riggenbach, Ferdinand Adolf Naeff and Olivier Zschokke. At first it \"only\" ran from Vitznau (439 m above sea level). M.) via Kaltbad (1453 m above sea level) M.) to the Rigi Staffelhöhe (1550 m above sea level). M.). As of 27 June 1873[2] [Note. 1] the railway was extended to Rigi Kulm (1752 m above sea level). M.) extended. This section is in the Canton of Schwyz, for which the VRB does not have a concession. The route belongs to the ARB and was leased from the Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn. The route is mostly single track; from the Freibergen request stop to Rigi Kaltbad-First, however, the route has been double-tracked since 1874. In the early years, the Rigibahn was only in operation in summer. After winter sports gradually developed, winter operations were also started. The narrow-gauge Rigi-Kaltbad-Scheidegg-Bahn (RSB) to Rigi Scheidegg, completed in 1875, began in Kaltbad. This railway was shut down in 1931 and finally demolished in 1942. Since 1968, the Weggis–Rigi Kaltbad cable car (LWRK), also operated by Rigi-Bahnen AG, has also ended in Kaltbad. On Rigi Staffel, the tracks of the (since 1. January 1970 officially so-called) Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn and the Arth-Rigi-Bahn, which has been running from Arth-Goldau since 1875. The VRB uses the parallel route of the ARB to the joint Rigi Kulm terminus. Both railways were once strictly separate and competitors. The transfer table in front of the joint depot building on Rigi Kulm served as the only connection. It was not until 1990 that a track connection between ARB and VRB was established in Rigi Staffel. This was the beginning of the merger, which was completed in 1992 and also includes the Weggis–Rigi Kaltbad (LWRK) aerial cableway. In 1937, the VRB switched to electric traction, and the Vitznau - Rigi Kulm received a catenary (catenary). In 1959 the transfer table in Freibergen, and in 1961 that in Kaltbad, was replaced by a rack and pinion switch, which was replaced in 2000 and 2000 respectively. 2012 bending switches were installed. In 2012, the station complex in Kaltbad was completely renovated and extended to two tracks. The Kaltbad station building was demolished, the new building started in May 2014, the shell was completed in September 2014 and opened on 1 January 2014. The new Kaltbad station building was inaugurated in March 2015.
