Made to the exact 1961 standard from the origins of the Eisenhower interstate highway system. The wider shields came with the revision of 1961—previously, three-digit route markers were the same size as two-digit, but with narrower numerals. This design was supplanted by the modern shield style—often with the state name omitted! —in 1971, and it gets harder and harder to find the original-style interstate route markers in many states. This particular route travels 20.79 miles (33.46 km) from I-64 and I-264 in Chesapeake north to I-64 in Hampton. I-664 forms the west side of the Hampton Roads Beltway, a circumferential highway serving the Hampton Roads metropolitan area.
