Made to the exact 1961 standard from the origins of the Eisenhower interstate highway system. The wider shields came with the revision of 1961 - previously, three-digit route markers were the same size as two-digit, but with narrower numerals. This design was supplanted by the modern shield style - often with the state name omitted! - in 1971, and it gets harder and harder to find the original-style interstate route markers in many states. This particular route runs for 52.56 mi (84.59 km) from which it runs an eastward and northward bypass of the cities of Richmond and Petersburg. The southern terminus is an interchange with I-95 southeast of Petersburg. I-295 then has an interchange with I-64 east of Richmond, crosses I-95 north of Richmond, and continues westward to its other terminus at a second interchange with I-64.
