Townsville is a city on the north-eastern coastof Queensland, Australia with a population of 180,820. It is the largest settlement in NorthQueensland and unofficially considered its capital hosting a significantnumber of governmental, community and major business administrative offices forthe northern half of the state. The cityis also a major industrial center.

The Townsvillearea was inhabited by Aboriginal Peoples when James Cook visited theregion but did not land in 1770. In1819, Captain Phillip Parker King and botanist Alan Cunninghamwere the first Europeans to record a local landing. In 1860, George Elphinstone Dalrympleled a maritime expedition to the region from Brisbane which ended in abattle, spears v guns and Dalrymple retreated. The first settlement was acamp that was established a camp below the rocky spur of Melton Hill in1864. Townsville’spopulation was 4,000 people by1882 and grew to 13,000 by 1891. In 1902 Townsville was proclaimed acityunder the “Local Authorities Act”.

This is a card, published by “Willmett& Sons, Townville and Charter Towers” chronicles the “TownsvilleNorth from Hospital”. Willmetts & Sonswas a printing house in Townsville, est. 1882, thatpublished view-cards depicting local scenes in tinted halftone that gave theillusion of being hand colored. Some of these cards have a very high glossfinish. This card c 1915 is in excellentcondition with minor wear and a clean, clear image. The reverse is also clean.
