Vintage Philippine Kupit Basket Bag Bontoc Kalinga Purse Rattan Reed 1950-70sThis vintage Philippines Kupit woven reed rattan basket bag purse will make a great addition to your collection. I am guessing that it was made in the Philippines for export to the West as a fashion accessory and was based on their traditional handmade basket bags. It features 2 separate handwoven basket forms...one that functions as the bag bottom, and one that functions as the lid and fits over the bottom bag portion. The two pieces are held together by a braided rope that attaches to each bottom end of the bottom basket and goes through a series of metal finish rings to hold everything in place in addition to a brown front tassel pull (which I would recommend not using as a pull due to the age and just consider it as a decorative accent).
Will make an excellent addition to your collection whether your focus is on Asian traditional folk artisan crafts or ethnic style bags of the world. Please note, per use as an everyday bag, I do not know how well it would hold up if used as an everyday purse due it\'s age and how fine the rattan style weaving is...so please do your own due diligence in making that decision. It does have wear from age including surface finish loss, fraying, loose fibers, shedding and MORE so please read complete details below and review photos closely for condition. Approximate weight is 5.5 ozs total
Measures approximately 4.25\" x 6\" x 9.5\" overall not including the rope strap that has a vertical drop of approximately 18\" when held at the top center and measured from there down to the top ring of the bag.
CONDITION >>>In vintage pre-owned used handmade condition with wear including fraying on the cord and at the knotted ends of the cord, the cord strap has folds in it and is out of shape due to the top few inches being tied in a knot for years, the finished surface of the woven bag material has surface finish loss in areas, patina, tarnish, oxidation, loose fibers, the rattan style material is actively shedding/flaking pieces off, unevenly woven patterns, open areas in the weaving, the metal components have surface finish loss, the bag weaving is brittle and dried out, some edges and surfaces of the weaving are frayed where something has rubbed up against it, the matching tassel pull has some fraying, stains, discoloring, yellowing, brittleness, dirt, dust, grime, dents, worn surface finish on the edges and overall wear from age and handling. I DO NOT know how long the bag will maintain it\'s integrity/form/shape if used as a handbag/purse due to how the materials have dried out due to age...please proceed with caution and do your own due diligence in determining if it is useable. Age/era: Unknown, but similar, if not exact styles of this bag that are found in University collections are attributed as being made sometime between the 1950\'s and late 1970\'s
