Vintage Papago Tohono O’odham Indian Hand Woven Geometric Design Basket Bowl:

Being offered is a vintage, antique, Papago Indianhand woven basket. The tribe is locatedin Arizona. The basket has a running geometricdesign or pattern. This basket iscrafted from yucca, devil’s claw, and bear grass as the foundation, with achord of willow at the top. The baskethas an age-related patina or discoloration to the straw. This is not unusual from exposure to lightover the decades. The basket showstypical age and wearing, and the staves or wefts show wearing with a few missing at the bottom edges. There is no loosening of the staves noted. Overall, the basket is innice shape for its age and the weave remains tight with no loosening. The basket is approx. 5 5/8" wide by 2 15/16"tall. Insurance is included in the priceof S & H.

The Tohono O’odham, as they are known today, or“Papago” people as they were called by the Spanish, live in the Sonoran desertcountry of southwest Arizona. Theancient name they called themselves was “Tohono Aw-aw-tam”, or the DesertPeople. Tohono O'odham means"Desert People". The federallyrecognized tribe is known as the Tohono O'odham Nation. The Tohono O'odham tribal government and mostof the people have rejected the historical name Papago, that was used byEuropeans after being adopted by Spanish conquistadores and later by Englishspeaking people.
