This partcular oyster shucking rig, once belonging to a shoreman shucker named Strick, comes from the Mid-Atlantic state of Maryland, down the southernmost point of the state, along the Chesapeake Bay. On Tangier Sound sits the city of Crisfield, the pride of Maryland and long known as the \"Seafood Capital of the World\" despite its ups and downs through the decades. Originally three settlement plots of land, the area was called Somer\'s Cove. Growth of the region was moving at a fast pace thanks to the railroad brought in primarily by the work of John W. Crisfield. In 1872, the region was officially incorporated and renamed in his honor. It wouldn\'t be long before Chesapeake Bay seafood was being shipped all over the US. Industry was booming, and by 1904, Crisfield would become the 2nd largest city in the state behind Baltimore. Despite challenges over the years, including the Great Fire of 1928, Crisfield would thrive through to the 1970s when a decline in the oyster population began to impact industry, as did changes in people\'s eating habits (enter fast food - yuck). Rail and other transport also expanded nationally, allowing other regions to get in on the action to ship their local oysters and other seafood delicacies, so some businesses moved to other regions of the country. This left many who lived and worked in Crisfield unable to sustain enough work to raise their families. Though it never resurrected its booming operations of the early days, Crisfield has leveled out with blue crab as its primary product, and revitalization plans have been in the works to repair damages from multiple coastal storms and hurricanes over the years among other deficits to the town\'s economies.

This set of knives and awls was owned by a shoreman worker named Strick. Included are 4 oyster shucking knives bearing his name burned and pressed into the wood handles, plus 3 awls of various lengths and handles used for prying open oysters, as well as chipping ice and other tasks.
