Charles Anderson Dana (August 8, 1819 – October 17, 1897)was an American journalist, author, and senior government official. He was atop aide to Horace Greeley as the managing editor of the powerful Republicannewspaper New-York Tribune until 1862. While therehe actively promoted the anti-slavery cause.

During the American Civil War, he servedas Assistant Secretary of War, playing especially the role of the liaisonbetween the War Department and General Ulysses S. Grant.In this capacity, Dana discovered frauds committed by quartermastersand contractors. As the eyes of the administration, as Abraham Lincoln calledhim, Dana spent much time at the front and sent to War Secretary Edwin Stantonfrequent reports concerning the capacity and methods of various generals in thefield.Dana went through the Vicksburg Campaign and was present at the Battleof Chickamauga and the Chattanooga Campaign. He urged placing General Grant insupreme command of all the armies in the field, which Lincoln did on March 2,1864.With the likely exception of John Rawlins, Dana had a greater influenceover Grant\'s military career than any other political or military man.

Dana was an avid art collector of paintings and porcelains andboasted of being in possession of many items not found in several Europeanmuseums.

Napolean Saronywas recognized as the elite photographer to thestars of late-19th-centuryAmericantheater and dignitaries of his day.From the late 1860\'s until Napoleon Sarony\'s death in 1896 he was deemed the premier portrait photographer of the United States, and one of the greatest in the world.
