MarkA. \"Droopy\" Clarkisa retiredU.S. MarineMajor General.Clark was the fourth commander ofMarine CorpsForces Special Operations Command(MARSOC). He retired from theMarine Corps in 2014 upon relinquishing command of MARSOC. Clark is a nativeofSioux Fallsand was raised inSouth DakotaandMinnesota. He graduated fromSouth Dakota StateUniversitywith a Bachelor of Science Degree in CommercialEconomics in 1980.According to a Q&A interview with the SDSUalumni association while Clark was serving as the Chief of Staff of SpecialOperations Command he said his most memorable moment while attending SDSU was\"without a doubt,Hobo Day.\" Upon completion ofOfficer Candidate Schoolin June 1981, Clark wascommissioned as a Second Lieutenant in theUnited States Marine Corps.Afterwards, he attended Flight School and wasdesignated a Naval Aviator in May 1983.He was assigned to fly theCH-53 Super Stallionafteradditional training atMarine Corps Air StationNew River, North Carolina. He participated in bothOperation Desert StormandOperation Desert Shield. Hisfirst involvement with Special Operations came as a result of a pilot exchangeprogram with theU.S. Air ForcewhereClark was assigned to the20th Special OperationsSquadronoperating theMH-53J Pave Low.While at the 20th SOS, Clark wasdeployed in support ofOperation Deliberate ForceduringtheBosnian War. From 2001 to 2002, Clark served as OperationsOfficer inTask Force K-Barduringthe early years ofOperation Enduring Freedom.Clark attended theUnited States Army WarCollegefrom 2002 to 2003.While a student there, he wrote a 67-pageStrategy Research Project titledShould the Marine Corps expand itsrole in special operations. He was the Director of Operations atUnitedStates Special Operations Commandfrom 2009 to 2011.While serving as the Director of Operations inJanuary 2011,Secretary of DefenseRobert Gatesannounced that Clark was nominated forpromotion to Major General. In May 2011, he replacedJoseph Votelas SOCOM\'s Chief of Staff as Votel went offto assume command ofJoint Special OperationsCommandfrom AdmiralWilliam H. McRavenClarkserved as SOCOM\'s Chief of Staff until August 2012 when he assumed commandofMarine CorpsForces Special Operations Commandfrom Major GeneralPaul E. LefebvreHe is the first MARSOC commander to have servedpreviously at SOCOM.
