A hand-loomed/embroidered silk shawl/mantle or wall hanging (Approx. 66 by 24 inches including border), also known as Chok, from Northern Laos.Chok weaving is a technique where two or more different coloured threads are inserted, by hand, between each row of warp thread - similar to embroidery or carpet weaving.I purchased this and other hangings in the late 1980s outside of Luang Prabang in a weaving village named Ban Phanom, directly from the families.
This weaving is less ornate than many others from the same area and time period.The warp/weft is red silk with blue, white, purple, green and yellow/gold embroidery representing elements from nature in geometric form. Done on a handloom, this piece is not quite square and also contains purposeful \"errors\" in the weaving to demonstrate that the weaver does not presume pefection in her work (good Buddhist humility). The piece is bordered and backed with an old, dirty and stained cotton? fabric stitched to the silk.Some of the red silk bands have also bled in washing and stained the border fabric.Pictures progress from the front side to the back side of the textile.
This is not a machine-made knock-off of the last 25 years sold for the tourist trade - it was made by and for the family. Age is likely between 60 and 90 years.
