Vic Elford and the Chaparral 2J at Riverside International Raceway Can Am1970. This is the fourth frame of a rare set of photographs showing the Chaparral 2J during its last four laps of competitive racing. It died early in Lap 5 before it made to Turn 6 again. Officially it is listed as DNF 5 due to auxilliary engine failure. Before the 1971 season began, the rules were changed and that mechanism of undercar suction was outlawed. That sealed the fate of the Chaparral 2J.
Note that smoke showing on the left rear side of car. The snow mobile engine was failing.I had been waiting to shoot several laps of the Chaparral, since it had such a history of engine failures. I figured shoot early in the race if I want any pics at all. My Lap 4 photograph posted here at shows smoke trailing the left rear of the car. The snowmobile engine was failing. This Lap 2 photograph, along with the Lap 1 and Lap 3 photographs shows no hint of smoke or engine failure.One thing about the car. You knew it had stopped somewhere along the circuit because it got so quiet. It could be heard clear from Turn 9 at Turn 6.
The innovative design of providing undercar suction for traction without drag became a winner and it is the key to the very high speeds of recent supercars cars (see McMurty). For the 1970 season, it repeatedly qualified for pole position, but the mechanical problems kept it from winning a race. It was as much as 2 seconds faster per circuit than all other cars, even with an main engine with much less power. The downforce suction system was outlawed at the end of the 1970 season and this 1970 run at Riverside was its last competition. This is a full frame image that fits into an 8x10 print and is not cropped. That is why there are large margins at top and bottom of print. Cropping it for any other configuration would change the image too much.
Watermarks, obviously do not appear on your purchased print. However, the brief description of the photo is part of the print. Please do not copy or use in any unauthorized fashion. Photographers like me do this to make what could be called a \"starving artist living wage.\"
Print is shipped USPS in a flat rigid container.
