The MSS model Velocette was simply a grown-up MAC, employing the same 96 mm stroke and an increased bore to take it to 495cc.

For some odd reason the Hall Green Works felt that the MSS would appeal considerably to outfit riders and so they loaded every possible item of strength onto it (the heaviest Webb girder forks attached to an overly robust frame bristling with sidecar fitments), which brought its weight up to 335 pounds; hardly suited to a machine catalogued as a Super Sports.

However, the MSS capabilities were soon realized and it acquired degrees of sophistication in its immediate pre- and post-war forms. Alas, in 1948, following the introduction of the famous water-cooled flat-twin LE model, the Velocette singles range was pruned back to the MAC 350 only. The MSS did not reappear till the mid-fifties, and then with a revised 86 x 86 configuration which brought the capacity up to 499cc.

From this sprang many, many famous variations of Velocettes big pushrod single: the Venom, the Venom Clubman, the Venom Thruxton, the Scrambler and the Endurance models. In fact, a Velocette MSS is still the only single-cylinder machine to have maintained a speed of 100 mph for 24 continuous hours!
